If you want you can even disable or stop the Windows Update for a short period or no need to stop the Windows Update setting permanently. If you want to skip an update, you can stop updates until the day you want to apply them. Using the Settings app, you can stop system updates for more than a month.

To disable automatic updates, make sure you follow the steps carefully:

How to Stop Automatic Updates using Group Policy

Make sure this option may not be available on Windows 10 version; we recommend this option to Windows 10 Pro users. On Windows 10 Pro, the Local Group Policy Editor allows you to disable automatic updates permanently, or you can change the Windows Updates policies to decide when updates should install on the device

  6. While on the page, you will need to click on the Check for Updates button to download and install the most recent patches.
  7. Note: if you want to re-enable automatic updates on the device, you can use the same steps above, but on step 3, make sure to choose the Not Configured options.

Method-6

How to Stop Automatic Updates using Registry

Again, this method belongs to Windows 10 Pro, you can also disable automatic updates using the Registry in at least two different ways.

Note: this is a friendly reminder that editing the Registry is risky and can cause irreversible damage to your installation if you don’t do it correctly. It's recommended to make a full backup of your PC before proceeding.

  1. .Click on Start on your PC and then search for regedit and click at the top result to launch the Registry. Now, you will need to navigate to the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
  2. Now, right-click on the Windows (folder) key, choose the New submenu, and then choose the Key option. Name the new key WindowsUpdate and press Enter.
  3. You will need to right-click on the newly created key, choose the New submenu, and choose the Key option. Name the new key AU and press Enter.
  4. Right-click on the AU key, and choose the New submenu, and choose the DWORD (32-bit) Value option. Name the new key NoAutoUpdate and press Enter.
  5. Make sure to hit the newly created key and changes its value from 0 to 1. Click the OK button.
  6. . Finally, restart your computer. After you accomplish this, Windows Update will no longer install monthly updates automatically on Windows 10. However, similar to using the Local Group Policy Editor, you can still download and install updates as necessary by clicking the check for updates button in the Windows Update settings.

Method-7

How to Limit Updates using the Registry

You can limit Windows updates instead of disabling them in the Registry. To do so, you should follow the below steps:

To customize Windows Update settings to block updates with the Registry, use these steps:

  1. Click on Start on your PC and then search for regedit and click at the top result to launch the Registry.
  3. Right-click the newly created key, select the New submenu and choose the Key option.
  4. Right-click on the AU key, and choose the New submenu, and choose the DWORD (32-bit) Value option.
  5. Now, name the new key AUOptions and press Enter.

Double click the newly created key and change its value (number only) to:

  1. Notify the download and auto install
  2. Auto download and notify for install
  3. Auto download and schedule the install
  4. Allow local admin to choose Settings.

These options work identically to the Group Policy Settings, and number 2 is the closest option to disable Windows Update Windows 10 permanently on your computer.

Click the OK button and restart your computer. Once you complete the steps, Windows 10 will stop installing updates automatically. However, you will get notifications when new updates are available, allowing you to install them manually.
